Our goal for the International Yoga Day

„The Joy of Yoga“

Deutsche Akademie für traditionelles Yoga e. V. is a member of the ATMAN Association for Yoga and Meditation, an international umbrella organisation for yoga and meditation of yoga organisations. Together with the other ATMAN organisations throughout Europe and around the world, we are celebrating International Yoga Day in order to leave all the differences behind and come together with a goal to show, that Yoga means much more than flexibility and fitness. Yoga means Unity.

It is therefore our responsibility to live unity and introduce Yoga for what it really is: a tool to expand consciousness, a science that unites, an ancient practice that allows us to leave all differences behind.

There is no doubt that our planet needs radical change – or more precisely: people need to change. Our level of consciousness, one might think, has declined over the last centuries despite increasing technological achievements. Wars are waged brutally all over the world, spiritual aspirations are reserved for a small minority, famine, excess, disease and exploitation are widespread. And these are only the physical symptoms based on our deficient mental and spiritual states. Humanity has reached an imbalance and a point where it poses a threat to its own survival.

Yoga is a tool that can help to rebalance humanity, to revive the innate spiritual aspiration and to bring harmony back into the world. On the occasion of International Yoga Day, we would like to take the opportunity and show, that Yoga holds solutions to many mankind´s problems – and more than that, yoga is accessible to everyone. Our goal is to raise awareness of yoga and offer free events for as many people as possible. We believe that everyone has the right to know and truly understand yoga and therefore we would like to use this day to bring the consciousness into the world.

Why the 21st of June as International Yoga Day?

June 21st is not just any day. In the northern hemisphere it is summer solstice at this time and winter solstice in the southern hemisphere. Everywhere in the world on this day the light is celebrated as a symbol for consciousness and life. In the northern hemisphere we celebrate the longest and thus brightest day of the year – in the southern hemisphere the return of light is celebrated. Both festivals of the year are intended to show us the balancing powers of the annual rhythm and how this balance leads to more and more light in our lives and higher levels of consciousness. Since Yoga is a state of complete equilibrium and shows us the way to balance, harmonize, integrate and heal, the celebration of light is a perfect opportunity to celebrate yoga as well.

The fact that the year is turning at this time is also very significant. No one can credibly argue that the world does not need major changes for its own long-lasting sustainability and health. With the change of light, the 21st of June becomes a very special day to promote change in the world. As proven by many studies and known in yoga for more than 1000 years, yoga is an amazing tool to bring about changes in human consciousness. And when the individual develops for the better, our world develops for the better. International Yoga Day could not be a better day.
